Traditional Thai Massage

Origins

Traditional Thai Massage is an ancient form of bodywork. Sometimes called Thai Yoga Massage or "Nuad Bo Rarn", its exact origins are unknown. We know it was practiced by Buddhist monks in Thai temples, and the technique is mentioned in texts dating from the second millennium BC. Some say it was introduced by a physician who was a contemporary of Buddha.

What Is It?

Thai massage - knee to chest

Thai Massage differs from the Swedish style of soft tissue massage as it incorporates yogic stretches and acupressure. While Swedish style uses long, broad strokes with the hands, Thai Massage uses thumb or palm pressure on the sen lines and points of the body. Sen lines are where the energy flows throughout the body, similar to Chinese meridians or Indian nadis. There are 72,000 sen lines but only 10 of these are used as a foundation for a treatment.

Working the sen lines helps to release energy blockages and stagnation to bring balance and harmony to the client's mind, body and spirit. The stretches in Thai Massage increase flexibility and help to release deep and superficial tension, also allowing energy to flow freely. The effect is relaxing and energizing at the same time.

I practice the northern style of Thai Massage, which is characterized by a gentle, flowing sequence of moves.

How Is It Done?

Thai Massage is traditionally practiced on a futon or padded mat on the floor, but I have adapted it to the massage table. The practitioner uses their body weight to apply stretches to the client and works with a gentle rocking movement while pressing the sen lines.

The client remains fully clothed apart from the feet. Clothing should allow for flexible movement, such as lightweight cotton trousers or leggings and a loose T-shirt. No oil or lotion is used.

Typical Thai Massage treatments last 60-90 minutes, and benefits may last up to 3 days.
